Metal tools & dies in industrial production are used for various kinds of presses or special tools fixed on the presses for manufacturing parts or products having required shapes with metal material through pressure. These special tools are generally called metal tools & dies.

Metal tools & dies are classified in accordance with technical features and operation combination as follows:

Classification according to technical features:
(1)Blanking die refers to the die that gets material separated along closed or open contour such as punching die, piercing die, cutting die, lancing die, trimming die, slitting die and etc. For example, it is used for making our products such as terminal,bracket, flange and etc.
(2)Bending die refers to the die that gets sheet blank or other blank materials bent & deformed along a straight line(or a bending line) so that a certain angle or shape can be formed for the workpiece.
(3)Drawing die refers to the die that makes sheet blank into open and hollow workpieces or further makes the shapes and dimensions of hollow workpieces changed.
(4)Forming die refers to the die that reproduces blank or semi-finished workpieces directly into different shapes according to the drawing profile with concave-convex die having material itself only for partial plasticity deformation such as bulging die, necking die, flaring die, raising die,flanging die, sizing die and etc.

Classification according to operation combination:
(1) Single operation die refers to the die that only one stamping operation shall be completed in one stroke of the press.
 (2)Compound die refers to the die that there is only one operation station, two or more stamping operations shall be completed at the same operation station at the same time in one stroke of the press.
 (3) Progressive die(also called continuous die)refers to the die that there are two or more operation stations in the direction of blank entry, two or more stamping operations shall be completed at the different operation stations step by step in one stroke of the press.

Continuous die(progressive die)refers to the die that strip stamping raw material shall be used with one set of dies for cold stamping of multi-stamping operations completed at several different operation stations at the same time in one stamping stroke of the press. Once stamping of die has been completed, the strip material shall be moved at a set distance until the product has been finished.

In the process of stamping with continuous die, the strip material shall be moved in one direction only from the very beginning to the end; With the strip material cut within the die, afterwards it is moved in two or more than two directions, it is called progressive die; With the strip material feeding completed within the die, it is called automatic continuous die; With one stamping production chain,stamping die uses different techniques having robot hands or other automatic facilities to get the stamping process done for workpieces with dies or parts moved , it is called multiple station die
